How much does a 2.5 gallon tank weigh?

12 × 6 × 8 in · freshwater planning

First decisions for this nano setup

A small base of 12 by 6 inches still needs suitable support. Keep the tank away from unsupported furniture edges, and check the maker’s support requirements for its frame. Water damage and uneven contact can undermine furniture even when the initial weight looks modest.

Assumptions and limits

This intentionally adds nominal water capacity plus gravel without subtracting displacement. It is a planning allowance, not a certified structural load. Assumed glass thickness is 3/16 inch up to 20 gal, 1/4 up to 55, and 3/8 above; real panes and bracing differ. Never use these estimates to design or build a tank. Roughly 10 lb/gal is only a shortcut; rocks, equipment, lids and the stand add weight. Use a suitable aquarium stand and get qualified floor advice if needed.

Water density reference; water is approximated at 8.34 lb/gal. Glass density is an assumed 0.0943 lb/in³; manufacturer empty weight is preferable.

2.5 gallon equipment and layout plan

A rectangular layout supports a straight front swimming lane and a rear equipment zone. The 12 × 6-inch base has an aspect ratio of 2:1. A lid or light must span roughly 12 inches; measure rim openings and bracket adjustment before ordering.

Even a nano tank needs level, continuous support appropriate to its frame. Dividing 35.55 lb by the 0.5 ft² base yields only an average. Feet or narrow rails concentrate weight. This is no certification of furniture or flooring.

The 5 gallon uses 75.67 lb/ft² averaged over the tank base; this tank uses 71.1, a reduction of 6.05%. Scale the plan down to the actual dimensions and capacity.

The working

Water: 2.5 nominal gal × 8.34 = 20.85 lb. Five glass panes: (12 × 6 + 2 × 12 × 8 + 2 × 6 × 8) × 0.19 in × 0.0943 lb/in³ = 6.37 lb. Add 8.33 lb for 2-inch gravel = 35.55 lb.
