How much dechlorinator for a 2.5 gallon tank?
12 × 6 × 8 in · freshwater planning
2.5 gallon · dechlorinator dose
First decisions for this nano setup
The 0.05 mL quarter-change amount is small enough that cap marks are unsuitable. Select a syringe whose graduations resolve the dose. If the amount is below your measuring tool’s resolution, use a more suitable tool rather than rounding by eye or assuming one drop has a fixed size.
Assumptions and limits
Read the current bottle. Seachem specifies 5 mL (one capful) per 50 US gallons of new water. Its rounded metric label is not an exact conversion of that ratio. When Prime is added directly to the aquarium, Seachem says to base the dose on the aquarium volume. The small change dose here assumes separate treatment in a container. Other products and formulations have different doses; no API dose is assumed. Generic formula: water gallons × label mL ÷ label gallons.

2.5 gallon equipment and layout plan
A rectangular layout supports a straight front swimming lane and a rear equipment zone. The 12 × 6-inch base has an aspect ratio of 2:1. A lid or light must span roughly 12 inches; measure rim openings and bracket adjustment before ordering.
| Separate new water | US gal | Prime mL | 5 mL cap equivalents | Approx drops at 20/mL |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nominal fill | 2.5 | 0.25 | 0.05 | 5 |
| 85% working fill | 2.12 | 0.21 | 0.04 | 4.25 |
| 10% change | 0.21 | 0.02 | 0 | 0.43 |
| 20% change | 0.42 | 0.04 | 0.01 | 0.85 |
| 25% change | 0.53 | 0.05 | 0.01 | 1.06 |
| 30% change | 0.64 | 0.06 | 0.01 | 1.27 |
| 50% change | 1.06 | 0.11 | 0.02 | 2.12 |
These tiny doses need a graduated syringe. Drop size varies by dispenser, angle and liquid; the drop column is only an illustration and must not set the measured dose. A complete nominal fill of this 2.5-gallon tank differs from treating its estimated 0.53-gallon quarter-change in a separate container. Direct-to-tank dosing follows the full aquarium-volume instruction on the label.
The 5 gallon uses 0.5 mL of Prime for a nominal fill; this tank uses 0.25, a reduction of 50%. Scale the plan down to the actual dimensions and capacity.
The working
Prime standard US label ratio: 5 mL ÷ 50 US gal = 0.1 mL/gal. Full nominal fill: 2.5 × 0.1 = 0.25 mL. A 25% change of estimated working water: 2.5 × 0.85 × 0.25 = 0.53 gal; dose = 0.05 mL when treating that new water separately.
| Water treated separately | US gal | Prime mL |
|---|---|---|
| Full nominal fill | 2.5 | 0.25 |
| Estimated 85% fill | 2.12 | 0.21 |
| 25% working-water change | 0.53 | 0.05 |
How to use this plan
- Read the exact product label and identify how much water it treats.
- Measure the new water; this change plan treats 0.53 US gallons separately.
- For standard Prime use 0.05 mL for that new water, measured with a graduated syringe. Follow all bottle conditions before adding it.

Questions before you buy
What dimensions does this 2.5 gallon calculation use?
