15 gallon column equipment and layout plan
Height is the defining feature; the short base limits horizontal layouts. The 13.75 × 13.62-inch base has an aspect ratio of 1.01:1. A lid or light must span roughly 13.75 inches; measure rim openings and bracket adjustment before ordering.
| Separate new water | US gal | Prime mL | 5 mL cap equivalents | Approx drops at 20/mL |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nominal fill | 15 | 1.5 | 0.3 | 30 |
| 85% working fill | 12.75 | 1.27 | 0.26 | 25.5 |
| 10% change | 1.27 | 0.13 | 0.03 | 2.55 |
| 20% change | 2.55 | 0.26 | 0.05 | 5.1 |
| 25% change | 3.19 | 0.32 | 0.06 | 6.38 |
| 30% change | 3.83 | 0.38 | 0.08 | 7.65 |
| 50% change | 6.38 | 0.64 | 0.13 | 12.75 |
Use the mL column for measurement. Fractional caps are hard to judge, and the illustrative 20 drops/mL conversion is not a verified Prime dropper calibration. A complete nominal fill of this 15-gallon tank differs from treating its estimated 3.19-gallon quarter-change in a separate container. Direct-to-tank dosing follows the full aquarium-volume instruction on the label.
Compared with the 15 gallon, this layout has the same 1.5 mL of Prime for a nominal fill. Extra nominal capacity alone does not change this requirement.
First decisions for this small setup
Write the replacement-container volume on the container. For this tank, the nominal full-fill allowance is 1.5 mL, whereas a separately treated quarter-change needs 0.32 mL. Keep these instructions distinct to avoid repeatedly treating a bucket as though it held the full aquarium.
The working
Prime standard US label ratio: 5 mL ÷ 50 US gal = 0.1 mL/gal. Full nominal fill: 15 × 0.1 = 1.5 mL. A 25% change of estimated working water: 15 × 0.85 × 0.25 = 3.19 gal; dose = 0.32 mL when treating that new water separately.
| Water treated separately | US gal | Prime mL |
|---|---|---|
| Full nominal fill | 15 | 1.5 |
| Estimated 85% fill | 12.75 | 1.27 |
| 25% working-water change | 3.19 | 0.32 |
Assumptions and limits
Read the current bottle. Seachem specifies 5 mL (one capful) per 50 US gallons of new water. Its rounded metric label is not an exact conversion of that ratio. When Prime is added directly to the aquarium, Seachem says to base the dose on the aquarium volume. The small change dose here assumes separate treatment in a container. Other products and formulations have different doses; no API dose is assumed. Generic formula: water gallons × label mL ÷ label gallons.

How to use this plan
- Read the exact product label and identify how much water it treats.
- Measure the new water; this change plan treats 3.19 US gallons separately.
- For standard Prime use 0.32 mL for that new water, measured with a graduated syringe. Follow all bottle conditions before adding it.

Questions before you buy
What dimensions does this 15 gallon column calculation use?
It uses a rounded 13.75 × 13.62 × 25 inch rectangle. Actual dimensions vary by brand and frame; measure your own tank.
What is the dechlorinator dose estimate for a 15 gallon column tank?
1.5 mL Prime for 15 US gal of new water
