How much dechlorinator for a 125 gallon tank?

The working
Prime standard US label ratio: 5 mL ÷ 50 US gal = 0.1 mL/gal. Full nominal fill: 125 × 0.1 = 12.5 mL. A 25% change of estimated working water: 125 × 0.85 × 0.25 = 26.56 gal; dose = 2.66 mL when treating that new water separately.
| Water treated separately | US gal | Prime mL |
|---|---|---|
| Full nominal fill | 125 | 12.5 |
| Estimated 85% fill | 106.25 | 10.62 |
| 25% working-water change | 26.56 | 2.66 |
125 gallon equipment and layout plan
A low, extended rectangle puts more of the layout along a horizontal swimming lane. The 72 × 18-inch base has an aspect ratio of 4:1. A lid or light must span roughly 72 inches; measure rim openings and bracket adjustment before ordering.
| Separate new water | US gal | Prime mL | 5 mL cap equivalents | Approx drops at 20/mL |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nominal fill | 125 | 12.5 | 2.5 | 250 |
| 85% working fill | 106.25 | 10.62 | 2.12 | 212.5 |
| 10% change | 10.62 | 1.06 | 0.21 | 21.25 |
| 20% change | 21.25 | 2.12 | 0.42 | 42.5 |
| 25% change | 26.56 | 2.66 | 0.53 | 53.12 |
| 30% change | 31.88 | 3.19 | 0.64 | 63.75 |
| 50% change | 53.12 | 5.31 | 1.06 | 106.25 |
Count full 5 mL capfuls only where the dose permits, then measure the remainder with a syringe. The drop estimate is impractical for large fills and varies with the dispenser. A complete nominal fill of this 125-gallon tank differs from treating its estimated 26.56-gallon quarter-change in a separate container. Direct-to-tank dosing follows the full aquarium-volume instruction on the label.
Moving up from the 120 gallon changes mL of Prime for a nominal fill from 12 to 12.5: an increase of 4.17%. Budget for the larger requirement rather than reusing the smaller plan unchanged.
Assumptions and limits
Read the current bottle. Seachem specifies 5 mL (one capful) per 50 US gallons of new water. Its rounded metric label is not an exact conversion of that ratio. When Prime is added directly to the aquarium, Seachem says to base the dose on the aquarium volume. The small change dose here assumes separate treatment in a container. Other products and formulations have different doses; no API dose is assumed. Generic formula: water gallons × label mL ÷ label gallons.

First decisions for this large setup
At 125 nominal gallons, write down whether conditioner is going into separate replacement water or directly into the aquarium. The label instruction changes the volume used for that calculation. Measure larger quantities in mL or full capfuls; keep the dosing record beside the hose routine to avoid a missed or duplicated addition.
How to use this plan
- Read the exact product label and identify how much water it treats.
- Measure the new water; this change plan treats 26.56 US gallons separately.
- For standard Prime use 2.66 mL for that new water, measured with a graduated syringe. Follow all bottle conditions before adding it.
